NYT Points Out Overdraft Fees Still A Problem | Ed Mierzwinski

A major article in today's New York Times, "Overdraft Practices Continue to Gut Bank Accounts and Haunt Customers," points out that while 2010 reforms put in place by the pre-CFPB regulators have helped, there's still work to be done to protect consumers from unfair overdraft practices. While years ago banks used "bounced check" fees to deter what was then seen as a negative behavior, more recently they have encouraged overdrafts by offering "standard overdraft protection" as if it is a feature, not a bug. They've made billions.

NEW REPORT: Ohio Receives "A+" in Annual Report on Transparency of Government Spending

Ohio received an “A+” when it comes to government spending transparency, according to “Following the Money 2015: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data,” the sixth annual report of its kind by the Ohio Public Interest Research Group Education Fund. Ohio's grade improved significantly since last year, jumping from a D- to the first A+ in the history of this report.

Credit Bureaus’ Deal to Improve Accuracy ‘Huge’ for Consumers

(Bloomberg) -- Buying homes, getting jobs and borrowing money will be easier after an agreement by the three biggest U.S. consumer credit reporting services with New York.[...] “It’s a sea change in the way the credit bureaus treat complaints,” said [U.S. PIRG's Ed] Mierzwinski. “The credit bureaus have been run by computers for years now. They’re going to have to hire more people and actually verify that what a creditor said is true.”

New Study: Traffic Data Does Not Support Spending on "Opportunity Corridor"

A new report by Ohio PIRG Education Fund names the "Opportunity Corridor" one of 11 examples of wasteful highway spending, based on its outdated assumptions of ever-increasing driving. The study, which details ten other highway “boondoggles” across the country, points out that the community has called for other transportation priorities, and that the data shows driving in the area has been on the decline for ten years. The study calls for the state to consider reprioritizing scarce transportation dollars to other projects.

After sixty years of almost constant increases in the annual number of miles Americans drive, since 2004 Americans have decreased their driving per-capita for eight years in a row. Driving miles per person are down especially sharply among Millennials, America’s largest generation that will increasingly dominate national transportation trends. But some skeptics have suggested that the apparent end of the Driving Boom might be just a temporary hiccup in the trend toward more driving for Americans.
